Redfish (October-December)

If you’re looking for the most exciting sight fishing opportunity possible in winter, we’ll be in Louisiana stalking Monster Redfish during parts of October, November and December. The majority of the Bull Redfish Population moves out of the Gulf and into the surrounding bay systems. Louisiana’s endless marsh system is hands down, the best Redfishing anywhere in the world and these are BIG fish. You can have legitimate expectations of sight fishing 20-30lb redfish and being exposed to fish approaching 40lbs on the shallow flats and in the back country ponds. This is the place, that on a typical day, you don’t cast at a fish less than 15lbs. We focus our guiding in the Shell Beach/Delacroix area which is due South of New Orleans. Its easy to stay in the city and have a short drive to the fertile fishing grounds of the expansive marsh. This is a true “Off the Grid” guided experience. Your phone doesn’t work and you may not see another boat all day. It should be on any fly and light tackle enthusiasts must have experiences.

The amount of Bio-diversity and shear mass of of aquatic and terrestrial life makes this one of the most unique guided charter for anglers.  These fish are also mad at everything and they charge flies! The eats are explosive, the runs are blistering, and sitting one of these pigs in your lap for a quick photo op will make you smile form ear to ear. This is one of my favorite places to take anglers just getting into fly and sight fishing. The majority of the time, the casts are manageable and the fish are cooperative. It is a an amazing experience weather you are an advance fly angler or the next generation just getting into the sport.

Louisiana redfish trips are full day only. We recommend booking multiple days because weather is unpredictable. I find booking three consecutive days is optimal. Sometimes we get to fish all three but you want to have some flexibility for when those cold fronts blow through or we have rain. Being prepared for this trip is vital for your success. Bringing layers and being prepared for the elements will make your experience more comfortable and productive. It can be cold and the wind often blows but without question, entirely worth it! Gloves, warm hats, heavy outer layers with some solid base layers are the norm. So are huge Redfish….

We are gear junkies here at Slow and Low. If you are unable to travel with your well maintained, high end rods and reels….no worries. When you step on our boat, you can always expect to have top of the line tools. We use Orvis Helios 2 Fly Rods paired with matching Tibor or Orvis Mirage Reels. All flies are hand tied and we are always prepared for whatever we may encounter out on the water. We are experts at knowing the forage species and spend numerous hours making sure our flies fit the bill and get eaten with a good presentation. If spin is your game, we use the latest from Team Daiwa and St. Croix and can always accommodate all anglers no matter your skill level. It is a pleasure to watch a guest evolve throughout the day and be a part of that first sight fished red or maybe even that first fish on fly.
